The three main population centres within the defined Polygon area are Cardiff, the capital city of Wales, Caerphilly to the north and Barry in the Vale of Glamorgan at the south west.
With a population in excess of 350,000 Cardiff is a vibrant city and, as the nation’s hub it acts as a magnet, drawing people-in from the outlying communities for business, education, shopping, leisure and sport. Barry and Caerphilly are fairly evenly matched in population terms with around 50,000 each. |

Cardiff DAB is a partnership between Radio Cardiff, Niocast Digital and commercial radio executive, Chris Hurst, which has been formed to bring small-scale DAB digital radio to the capital city of Wales.
Based in Butetown, Radio Cardiff is the city's award-winning local radio station – offering a diversity of music styles, local and national news and community interest programmes, every day. A service of Safer Wales, Radio Cardiff is now embracing DAB as a means of forging even closer links with the communities excluded by mainstream media. Chris Hurst operates successful, locally-focused radio stations in Cheshire, regional music genre stations in Manchester and Liverpool and a local multiplex. Chris knows south Wales well through his involvement with Valleys Radio and Swansea sound in his former role as MD of Wireless Group local stations. Niocast Digital operates the small-scale DAB multiplex in Manchester, one of ten across the UK taking part in a national trial of the new system. Having also run successful trials in Dublin and Cork, Niocast is one of the most experienced operators of small-scale DAB. |
What is DAB?
DAB stands for Digital Audio Broadcasting. DAB opens up new opportunities for broadcasters and a dramatic increase in listener choice. Here in Cardiff we’re planning to create a new ‘ecosystem’ of radio listening that caters for a wide range of tastes, interests, communities and age groups. Why you should get your radio station on DAB
|
A radio ecosystem is an interdependent community of transmission providers, broadcasters, advertisers and listeners - all connected for mutual gain and to maximise individual outcomes".
